Constructor-time item validation, *before* any changes are made in
Ecco.  (Also applies to .upgrade().)  This should prevent some
kinds of data corruption due to creating items with bad arguments.
(That is, a half-created, half-upgraded, or just plain invalid item 
won't be created or updated.)
