Implement polymorphism, hierarchy manipulation, validation,
field defaults, and more folder-level features.  Rework
Items to be an int subclass for easy hash/compare/convert.

(Note: Most of these features are lightly tested (at best!)
and virtually undocumented as yet.  Back up your data before
you use this for anything!)
